How to take a Canada visa photo with a smartphone
A smartphone photo can be a good starting point when the source image is sharp, evenly lit, and taken from face height. The goal is to begin from a natural identity photo and then crop and format it, not to rescue a dark selfie with heavy edits.
- Stand in front of a plain white or light-coloured wall with soft, even daylight.
- Keep the camera at eye level and the face centered and looking straight ahead.
- Keep a neutral expression with the mouth closed and eyes open.
- Leave enough space above the head for the 35 x 45 mm crop.
- Export a clean file, then crop to the visa layout and check face height 31 to 36 mm.
Retake the photo before you over-edit
If one side of the face is darker, the background has strong shadows, or the head is tilted, retaking the photo is usually safer than aggressive correction. Heavy edits can create unnatural skin, hair edges, or compression artifacts that read as tampering.
Aligning the eyes, head, and chin with a positioning guide is easier than fixing a weak source image, so a fresh photo in better light often beats heavy editing.

This guide summarizes the IRCC visa application photograph specification and uses the PR card and passport pages only to show where the 50 x 70 mm rules differ.

Common Canada Photo Rejection Reasons
Even minor deviations can cause IRCC to reject your photo, delaying your application. Avoid these frequent errors:
Sunglasses and tinted glasses are strictly prohibited. Non-tinted prescription glasses may be acceptable if eyes are clearly visible with no glare and the frame does not cover the eyes. If in doubt, remove glasses.
The face height must be between 31mm and 36mm. If you crop the photo too close or zoom out too far, the photo will be rejected.
Ensure lighting is front-facing and even. Shadows on the background wall or on the side of the face are a common cause of rejection.
IRCC requires a strict neutral expression. Smiling, raising eyebrows, or showing teeth will result in photo rejection.
Why Use the Canada Visa Photo App?
The on-screen overlay helps you match the 35×45mm proportions, assisting in verifying the required 31–36mm face height.
Directly output the required dimensions for Canada visitor visas, Study Permits, and Work Permits.
All image processing occurs locally on your iPhone. Your personal photos are never uploaded to a remote server.
Review face position, margins, and background before paying, so you can verify compliance with specifications in advance.
Please note: This app helps prepare photo files for online upload. It is not affiliated with IRCC, and it does not submit applications. For paper-based applications like PR cards, an official photographer's stamp on the back is mandatory. The app's outputs do not replace this requirement. Check the latest rules at Canada.ca.

FAQ
Can a smartphone photo meet the Canada visa standard?
Yes, when the lighting, background, distance, and face position are controlled. Start from a sharp, evenly lit photo and crop to the 35 x 45 mm layout.
What background should I use for a smartphone photo?
A plain white, off-white, or light grey wall with soft, even daylight. Avoid patterns, shadows, and strong color variations.
Is it safe to retouch the photo on my phone?
Light cropping and exposure correction are fine, but heavy edits that change skin, hair edges, or face shape are risky. Retake the photo instead of over-editing.
