Plain white or light-coloured background

The official visa photograph specification calls for a plain white or light-coloured background with even lighting. A real wall in white, off-white, or light grey is safer than a digital replacement that leaves a visible cut-out edge around the hair or shoulders.

Stand slightly away from the wall to reduce shadows, and keep furniture, wallpaper texture, and color gradients out of the frame.

Avoid shadows, patterns, and heavy background replacement

Shadows across the face, nose, or background and any pattern or strong color variation can make a photo risky. If a digital background replacement looks obvious, retake the photo against a real plain wall instead of editing heavily.

The face outline must stay natural. Editing that changes the face shape or hair edge is a common reason a photo is questioned.

Common Canada Photo Rejection Reasons

Even minor deviations can cause IRCC to reject your photo, delaying your application. Avoid these frequent errors:

Sunglasses or Tinted Glasses

Sunglasses and tinted glasses are strictly prohibited. Non-tinted prescription glasses may be acceptable if eyes are clearly visible with no glare and the frame does not cover the eyes. If in doubt, remove glasses.

Incorrect Face Size (Head Height)

The face height must be between 31mm and 36mm. If you crop the photo too close or zoom out too far, the photo will be rejected.

Shadows on Face or Background

Ensure lighting is front-facing and even. Shadows on the background wall or on the side of the face are a common cause of rejection.

Smiling or Showing Teeth

IRCC requires a strict neutral expression. Smiling, raising eyebrows, or showing teeth will result in photo rejection.

FAQ

What background is required for a Canada visa photo?

A plain white or light-coloured background with even lighting. White, off-white, or light grey are all common safe choices.

Can I replace the background digitally?

You can, but a visible cut-out edge around the hair or shoulders is risky. A real plain wall is safer than heavy background replacement.

Why are shadows a problem?

Shadows on the face, nose, or background interfere with identity confirmation and make the photo look unevenly lit.
