Spain Student Visa (D) photo requirements

What the official information confirms

The Spain student visa (D studies, stays over 90 days) is filed in person (by appointment) at the Embassy of Spain in Japan (Tokyo, sole jurisdiction for Japan). A printed photo is a mandatory document, and the same photo requirement applies to each accompanying family member.

No official digital photo upload rule exists (the document set is submitted in person by appointment); printing and bringing the photo remain the applicant's own actions (the tool prepares the print photo only — PREPARE ≠ SUBMIT). For stays longer than 90 days, a Foreigner Identity Card must be applied for within one month of entry (a separate step from the photo requirement).

• Item 2 of the Study visa document list at the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo states verbatim: "Photograph. A recent, passport-size, colour photograph, taken against a light background, facing forward, without dark or reflective glasses, or any garments concealing the oval of the face." Colour, light background, and facing forward are verbatim facts from the Tokyo page.
• The authority publishes no photo dimensions in millimetres and no photo count. The Tokyo page states only the qualitative "passport-size", with no numeric size, count, recency period, or face-geometry values. This page keeps the size and count unregistered and does not convert the qualitative wording into numbers. 35×45 mm is the adopted value of the separate Schengen C (short-stay) procedure, not a student visa requirement.
• The study visa does not go through the UGE (the central authorisation layer for telework / digital nomad work); it is filed directly with the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo (BLS is not used). A photograph is required only at the consular stage. Applications must be submitted in person at the Consular Office and an appointment is necessary. The visa fee is an amount equivalent to 80 euros. Each accompanying family member submits the same document set as the student (item 2 = Photograph included).

How unspecified conditions are handled

The phrase “passport-size” and general photo practice are not converted into a fixed value such as 35×45 mm. In the Tool, enter the dimensions shown by the current application guidance.
