Austria residence permit photo requirements

What the official information confirms

The first application (Erstantrag) for an Austria residence title (Aufenthaltstitel) is submitted in person at the Austrian Embassy in Tokyo only; external providers and VFS do not accept it. The required document „Lichtbild" (photo) is governed by the federal portal oesterreich.gv.at, and the Red-White-Red Card page on migration.gv.at confirms the same rule (45x35 mm in width-x-height order, 6 months).

The application is submitted on paper (original + copies) in person; no digital upload flow exists. This tool prepares the print photo only, and the in-person submission remains the applicant's own action. The Austria Schengen C visa (35×45 mm portrait, plain-light, 6 months) and the Working Holiday Programme (WHP, Visum D, ICAO) are separate procedures, and their values are not inherited by the residence permit.

• The official page requires the photo to be 45 x 35 mm (width x height), stated width-first („Größe: 45 x 35 mm") — 45 mm wide by 35 mm high, a landscape photo. This is the mirror of the Austria Schengen C visa photo (35×45 mm portrait).
• The photo must be no more than 6 months old, as required by both the federal portal and the Red-White-Red Card page.
• The number of photos, colour vs black-and-white, and the background are absent from all reviewed official pages and remain unregistered in the Requirement record (no values are inherited from other records).
• No official face-geometry rule exists either, and no face guide matches the 45×35 mm landscape size, so the tool does not show a face guide.

How unspecified conditions are handled

The phrase “passport-size” and general photo practice are not converted into a fixed value such as 35×45 mm. In the Tool, enter the dimensions shown by the current application guidance.

• No face guide is shown to fill in an official value that has not been confirmed.
• After editing and review, confirm the accepted format and conditions in the application portal before submitting.
